Catalogue Introduction

The credible world in a world of non-belief, hence To be or Not To Be.

In 1997, Raphael Vella wrote "Brian Grima's Malta is more like a ghost town, an island at a standstill, a surreal place without a memory of the last two centuries". For sure that the mystery is still there. The landscape is almost entirely depopulated to reveal just the scenography, except for some women clad in black faldettas that thought it safe to venture out in the open airy spaces, where Neolithic monoliths and imposing bastions dominate the scene.

Malta has always been my mystical muse, from the Neolithic temples, once thought to have been built by giants, to Baroque palaces, imposing churches and pharaonic bastions left by the Order of St John. All of these being built in the wonderful honey coloured globigerina, against the magical Mediterranean blue of sea and sky. My inspiration also hovers over the world of the minor arts, beautiful rusty wrought iron and intricatly inlaid pieces of furniture that form part of our rich artistic heritage.

I hope that these wprks convey my love for our beautiful country, and make everyone feel proud to be Maltese.

The word etching is derived from the Dutch etzen - to eat. Therefore, in order to make an etching at all, one must employ an eating-away, or as it is technically called, a biting.......
